Beekeeper of the Year

Purpose

To give recognition to the outstanding beekeeper who has made a significant contribution to beekeeping in Wake County; a person who sets high standards and who is looked upon as a resource of beekeeping knowledge.

Qualifications

Must have kept honeybees for at least 5 years and an active participant of the Wake County Beekeepers Association for the same time.

Can only receive the award once every 5 years.

Should show evidence of willingness to share information with other beekeepers.  Served as a source of knowledge and skills to new beekeepers through mentoring or teaching at bee schools or other instructional venues;

Support of beekeeping groups: A. Note the different ways in which the person has given help or aid to local, state, or national groups. Examples: (1) Do they attend state level meetings? (2) Do they give assistance and take part in these meetings? (3) Do they attend local meetings on a regular basis or just “show up” when they need help? (4) Do they assist with programs, fund raising, or refreshments? (5) Are they willing to hold offices and do the job? (6) Do they work to encourage membership. (7) Do they work with extension agents on programs to better the beekeeping industry as a whole? a. Honey marketing. b. Pollination. c. Pesticide usage, etc.

Evidence of participation in non-beekeeping public service relating to beekeeping (ie: schools, fairs, service clubs, beginning beekeepers, removal of swarms, etc.)

Speaking engagements to: (a) Schools. (b) Civic groups. (c) Horticulture and gardening clubs, etc. 1. Newsletters. 2. Magazine articles. 3. Brochures and pamphlets. 4. Fairs and public celebrations.

Must have a good working knowledge of “all aspects of beekeeping including diseases, mites, State laws, management, etc. Journeyman

Other achievements: A. Please list any accomplishments or acknowledgments the person may have received from groups, outside of beekeeping. Examples: (1) Churches. (2) 4-H clubs. (3) FFA/FHA clubs. (4) Garden clubs. (5) Horticulture groups. (6) Farmers= organizations. (7) Public or private schools. (8) Scout groups, etc.
